English description: Residence in Verga, Kalamata – A modern approach to the vernacular architecture of Mani
The architectural office Hionidis Architecture undertook the creation of a modern residence with traditional references and in harmony with the landscape of Mani, at the foothills of Μount Taygetos.
The house is built near Verga, the closest settlement to Kalamata in the Messinian Mani. What primarily characterizes the location of the house is the natural landscape, with the olive groves, the spectacular view of the Messinian Gulf and the steep, sloping terrain. The integration of the house into the landscape and its direct relationship with the natural environment are main concerns of the design.
“The aim is for the individual to inhabit the natural landscape itself when living in the building”.
Based on these principles, the interior and exterior of the house are connected both visually and with regard to their use, making the best out of the climate and the plot’s panoramic view.
The building comprises two independent, two-storey residences (one of 146 m² and one of 111 m²), with separate entrances and balconies, sharing the main outdoor space and facilities. The isolated location of the residence and its close relation with the landscape offer an opportunity for relaxation, tranquility and contemplation.
At the same time, the outward-looking nature of the house and the creation of spaces for social contact are sought. For this reason, in addition to the direct connection between the interior and exterior of the house, the open, communal space of the terrace is created, including a swimming pool and barbeque, to be used by all residents.
“The morphology of the building is inspired by the local vernacular architecture of Mani”.
The houses are organized in two distinct stone buildings – towers, thus fragmenting the overall volume of the building into smaller ones, which approximate the traditional architecture, the scale of the landscape and of man. These two austere volumes are interwoven with the semi-outdoor and outdoor spaces that surround them, following the slope of the ground.
“The materiality of the building refers directly to the natural landscape”.
Local Mani stone, stone floors and soft color tones are used, which through simplicity and harmony sharpen the senses, in the same way they are sharpened when strolling through nature. The interior follows a minimal aesthetic, which is based on the aforementioned principles.
At the same time, they incorporate modern home network infrastructure and systems, such as smart house technologies, heat pumps for heating and cooling, remote-controlled shades. Thus, the design approaches the local architecture in a modern way, incorporating the amenities provided by new technologies into traditional architectural principles and forms.
The bioclimatic behavior of the building is one of the main design requisites, aiming to ensure optimal living conditions, but also energy efficiency during its use. The orientation of the building and the shape of the volumes have been studied with regard to the sunlight and wind conditions throughout the year.
“The building is sheltered from the North, with low height and limited openings in that side, while its South side takes advantage of the sun with large windows and shades”.
The interior arrangement ensures natural cooling and ventilation, while the external sunshades, covering the side towards the sea, protect the body of the building from exposure to the sun. Its good thermal performance is enhanced by the thermal insulation, stone walls, cold floors and energy-efficient windows.
Architectural office Hionidis Architecture has been active in the field of architectural design and building construction for more than 20 years. Its projects include mainly residential, as well as public and commercial buildings. The design approach consists of a constant search for the new and the optimal, with regard to the aesthetics, function and economy of each project. The goal is to create high quality spatial experiences with absolute consistency in construction.
