Studio Opaque² undertook the design of a unique residence in Symi Island, Greece. The project is about a restored neoclassical property that celebrates traditional architecture with modern flair. The design respects the original structure, incorporating materials and motifs that reflect the island’s heritage while adding contemporary functionality and style.
The house features an open-plan design with a double-height ceiling, creating a grand and airy feel with large windows that flood the room with natural light, complemented by sheer curtains that soften the bright atmosphere. The use of soft whites and beige tones throughout the space gives it a calm, sophisticated feel.
The pitched ceiling with exposed wooden beams is a standout architectural feature, giving the space a warm, rustic feel. These beams are typical of older Symi homes, preserved and celebrated in this restoration. The flooring is made up of small of two hues of reddish-brown terrazzo with white marble pieces in between.
In the living area there is a centered black Etienne cocktail metal-framed glass coffee table by Alfonso Marina around a light, neutral-colored sofa by Restoration Hardware and paired with vintage dark wood wainscot chairs by the antique shop John Stephens. The long custom-made marble console behind the sofa features textured, earthy tones, reinforcing the natural material palette.
To the right, a simple yet elegant fireplace in black serves as a focal point, next to a metal cabinet filled with books and decor items. The Vera sconces with its delicate floral shape by In Common With, designed to meld seamlessly into its surroundings and fitted with hand-finished brass details and a side-by side duo of dim-to-warm bulbs.
The deep red tiles in the backsplash make this corner a focal point, bringing warmth and color to the otherwise neutral setting. The inox sink is centered with the wall mounted tap by AXOR and on both sides there are white marble tiles on the top of the counter. Above the sink there is a central arched wall nook with a wooden shelf and a decorative plate on top.
On both sides custom-made inox with glass cabinetry maintain an airy, open feel while providing practical storage. The dining area is anchored by a long wooden table surrounded by four spindle-back chairs that seats multiple guests, giving the space a communal, welcoming atmosphere ideal for hosting. Above the dining table, four elaborate cast glass funnels refashioned as pendant lights with conical shades provide subtle lighting.
On the left side of the kitchen there is a hall that leads to the bathroom area. Entering the bathroom, the design draws inspiration from the island’s historical character while providing a serene, spa-like experience. On the right there is an impressive sculptural, monolithic sink. Made of marble, it has a block-like structure with clean lines, which contributes to the minimalist approach. Either side of the custom-made mirror features wall-mounted iron candle sconces, introducing a touch of old-world charm.
These metal sconces with tall, tapered candles give the bathroom an atmospheric, almost romantic quality, paying homage to the past. A standout feature is the circular shower at the end of the room. Framed by a delicate curtain that wraps around the shower space, it creates a private, intimate bathing area. The recessed ceiling lighting above the shower highlights the space with a soft, diffused glow, adding to the bathroom’s serene atmosphere. The minimalist rainfall showerhead further adds to the luxurious yet understated vibe.
The walls have a subtle texture of plaster, contributing to the tactile experience of the space. The floor is paved with terracotta tiles, bordered with a grid pattern of lighter stone, balancing tradition with modern touches. This material brings warmth to the neutral color palette and connects the space to its Mediterranean roots, as terracotta is commonly used in Greek island homes.
On the mezzanine the bedroom’s open structure and thoughtfully chosen decor reflect the island’s historic charmwhile providing contemporary comfort. The room benefits from ample natural light, streaming in through the large windows that frame views of Symi’s scenic landscape. The simple custom-made metal structure of the bed complements and comes in contrast with the rich textiles. Above the bed hangs a detailed tapestry with intricate patterns, lending a touch of history and artistry to the room. This piece ties in with the home’s restored character, echoing Symi’s Byzantine influences and nautical heritage.
On the sides of the bed there are white marble side tables with the Fazzo Table Lamp on top by the In Common With. On the left side of the bedroom, a deep green wooden cabinet adds a pop of color and serves as a storage solution. Next to it is a small sitting area with a rustic lounge wooden chair by Alfonso Marina and minimalist metal side table by Frama, creating a cozy nook for reading or relaxing.
On the right side we have an antique wooden bench with a white marble table and a floor light by Porta Romana with decorative paintings on the walls. The house was designed as a contemporary residencewhile maintaining its authentic features as the main structural division. The materials were curated with precision along with natural light and raw materialsand colors in order to achieve a harmonious aesthetic.
