English description: In Petralona, a very dense, but low in building height, area in Athens, Greece, 314 Architecture Studiohas designed an apartment block, called H50. The studio’s concept was based on the idea of a monolithic structure, made from a single piece of stone such as marble. The key element in the design process was to expose and contrast the rough and smooth surfaces of the metamorphic rock through the sweeping triangular curves of the exterior.
The building’s neighbourhood is very close to “Filopappou hill”, a well-known archaeological site in the center of Athens. The plot has a total area of 118 m² and an interesting shape, thus inspiring the design team to study the composition as a whole, and mainly the connection of the facades as a visual entity.
The historical background of the site inspired 314 Architecture Studio to create a solid, monolithic sculpture that resembles a roughly cut piece of marble, similar to the ancient Greek ruins found at the numerous archaeological sites of the city. The composition’s volume consists of six sides. Each side is further separated in flat or concave triangles, which have undergone a special treatment in terms of texture, so that smooth ones lie next to rough ones.
At the same time, viewed from a different perspective, the morphological treatment of H_50 with the triangular surfaces is very close to the logic of origami folds. The result of the final composition, meaning the solid impression of raw marble, surprisingly seems to coexist with the lightness of folded paper.
The entrance to the building is made with pilotis, creating free space. The apartments are accessed by a curved staircase and an elevator. The spaces of the apartments are expanded towards the balconies that are placed on the southeast side, which is the central face of the plot, on Roumelis Street.
Finally, arched windows allow views of the other two sides of the project, at Kolokotroni Gennaiou and Pamfilis streets. These windows break up the monolithic construction, and add an extra element to the original proposal.
To conclude, H_50 encourages diversity in the urban landscape, through its striking form and design freedom. Thanks to the alternative reading of the area, firstly as a historical place, and secondly as a place of modern dialogue where the old and the new coexist, 314 Architecture Studioexperiments with the typology of the Athenian “polykatoikia” and the interpretation of the raw rock and ancient ruins of the Greek landscape.
