Bureau de Change has designed the new flagship store for renowned jeweler Nikos Koulis, located on Athens’ prestigious Voukourestiou Street. Drawing inspiration from Athens’ rich cultural references and the intricate craftsmanship of Koulis’ jewelry, the store is a thoughtful balance of historical elements and modern design.

The project begins with a bold reimagining of the building’s 1960’s facade. Rather than opting for a conventional glass storefront, the architects introduced an irregularly shaped window that provides fragmented views of the interior, sparking curiosity and inviting closer inspection from passersby. Framing this unique window is a facade inspired by the proportions of Athens’ ancient city walls, crafted from aluminum panels. These panels are embossed with patterns inspired by the fine detailing of 19th-century jewelry boxes, reflecting the craftsmanship behind Koulis’ creations.

At street level, the aluminum transitions to slabs of travertine and marble, anchoring the design in materials that reflect Greece’s architectural tradition. The aluminum door handle, folded and inlaid with gold, serves as a subtle nod to the luxurious materials found inside the store, while smoothly linking the exterior to the interior design narrative.

“Inside, the store draws inspiration from the structured elegance of Koulis’ jewelry. The design incorporates contrasts between light and dark, as well as smooth and textured surfaces. Silk wall coverings reflect light and create a soft, sensuous effect, which is complemented by a dark oak floor composed of narrow linear planks that have been brushed for texture”.

At the rear of the store, a striking staircase concealed behind bevelled glass panels becomes a centerpiece of the design. This staircase leads to a mezzanine level that houses a private high-jewelry salon and viewing room. Stretching across the width of the store, the staircase creates a dramatic double-height void, offering an uninterrupted view between the entrance and the mezzanine.

The mezzanine wall is designed as an architectural feature in its own right, composed of elongated prisms with alternating polished metal and illuminated surfaces. These prisms form a screen that separates the more private mezzanine area from the main retail space below, while also visually connecting the two levels. Viewed from the street, the prisms appear as a glowing curtain through the stone-framed window.

“The mezzanine offers a lighter, more relaxed atmosphere compared to the main floor. Furnished with white carpets and soft seating, it creates an environment that encourages clients to linger and enjoy a more personal experience”.

Custom-designed pieces throughout the store underscore its individuality. Bureau de Change collaborated with Koulis to create furniture that suits the space perfectly, such as a tea table and desk mirror. These items, along with a wall-mounted mirror by Koulis himself, reflect the store’s emphasis on craftsmanship and personalized design.

The store’s display cases are equally considered, crafted from lacquered wooden boxes set on slim legs made from a mix of polished and matte metals. These cases are thoughtfully arranged in both vertical and horizontal configurations, creating a layout that feels intentional and uncluttered. At the rear of the store, a lacquered cabinet is designed to wrap around a structural column, while the largest piece of cabinetry is positioned in the storefront to serve as the window display.

The architects, Katerina Dionysopoulou and Billy Mavropoulos of Bureau de Change, bring their unique approach to this project. Their work combines formal architectural training with a desire to infuse spaces with creativity and innovation. By balancing analysis with experimentation and craftsmanship, they have created a retail space that reflects both the artistry of Nikos Koulis and the cultural richness of Athens.

This flagship store goes beyond traditional retail design, offering an environment where the artistry of jewelry and the architectural narrative come together to create an engaging experience for visitors. Through its thoughtful integration of materials, form, and light, the store is an example of the power of design to elevate both product and place.
