Situated within the southern suburbs of Athens, Greece, 314 Architecture Studio designed “Through Ferns”, a futuristic –under construction- residential building, inspired by the morphology and growth of a fern. The building just like the dimorphic plant widens and opens up outwards, generating big open terraces at the upper floors and maximum green space at the ground floor.
In the large plot crated by conjoining two different plots in tangent, the complex is developed around the common staircase that serves as core or the stem of the fern. The structure lightens as the stems extend from its center to the end of the petal leaf form. Each petal carries a swimming pool at its very tip resembling the droplets of water remaining at the leaf’s edges of the plant. The core of the fern formation, the central staircase of the dwelling complex, is coved with fern plants that naturally grow and develop along the structure and the different levels of it.
Large windows cover all the facades. U-glass is used, hiding the solid walls and visually transforming them into thin outlines or nerves, seen from the outside-in while allowing natural light to enter the interior. The blurred out interior views also serve to the occupant’s privacy.
An organically shaped light-structure runs along the limits between the plot and the city while artificial lakes and swimming pools offer reflected views of the complex in the surrounding landscape.
