Το Rethinking Modernity[…]

“For a long time, the modern in architecture has been identified with the work of an avant-garde originating from central Europe and the USA. It was not until the post-war period, particularly during the 1970s, that an alternative concerned with different corners of the world and lesser-known architects became the object of systematic study.
This book deals with this alternative modern, casting a closer look at the concepts and design tools that engendered it, through the work, especially during the period between the two world wars, of relevant architects who have been particularly influential within the context of modernity, in both national and local contexts”.
By exploring lesser-known architects from across the globe alongside mainstream masters of the Modern, Rethinking Modernity puts forward a compelling case for a much wider range of diverse architectural projects.
The book challenges stereotypical definitions of modernity and offers a richer understanding of a crucial tendency in architectural history, which remains timely to this day.
“Design strands that drew on the heritage and economy of means characterizing regional cultures and that were the way forward for a distinct, alternative lineage of the modern remain particularly relevant, as well as still largely unexplored”.
“The architects here [discussed] are often considered the ‘silent’ or ‘neglected’ figures of the modern, attracting little interest from the international press until the 1970s or 1980s. Their place of origin, on the periphery of Europe and the USA, and the relatively local impact of their architectural production contributed to this attitude.
This book […] aims to rethink modernity by juxtaposing these projects with works of the well-known masters in order to challenge what has been considered as canonical. Contradictions inherent in the work of the pioneers make the direct connection of the alternative with the mainstream apparent, and accentuate the importance that alternative analytical gazes hold for an expanded interpretation of the modern”.
“Rethinking Modernity features the work of architects such as Luis Barragán, Dimitris Pikionis, Gio Ponti, José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat, Max Cetto, Erich Mendelsohn, Marcel Breuer, and many more”.
It explores modernity in regions such as Spain, Italy, Greece, Norway, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, by discussing key projects such as the Rivera Kahlo House (1931-32), the De La Warr Pavillion (1935), the Baensch House (1936), the Villa Stenersen (1937), and the Barragán House and Studio (1948).
“The book includes over 80 rarely-seen images (color and B&W pictures, archive photography an re-drawn plans”.
Complementing the RIBA Publishing titles Redefining Brutalism (Simon Henley) and Revisiting Postmodernism (Sir Terry Farrell and Adam Nathaniel Furman), Rethinking Modernity sits within a series of books aiming to explore new interpretations of well-loved architectural movements.
“The appeal of Rethinking Modernity lies in its much needed critical courage. One is relieved to see included great works by modest designers, while low-key interventions are also recovered from neglect, finding new life”*.
Book’s front cover
“The first two chapters (Tradition and Identity | Modernity and context) tackle tradition, identity and context as priority conceptual parameters; the next two (Materials and Colors | The forbidden wor(l)d; ornament and decoration in the alternative modern) look at materials, colors and ornamentation as the means for materializing it; the fifth chapter (Geometry and spatial experience) deals with the built outcome and spatial experience as a direct result of a design approach centered around the individual user, instead of on collective considerations.
The last two chapters (The modern diaspora – Latin America ** | Modern diaspora and the British interwar) offer the opportunity to examine the mainstream in a direct parallel with examples of alternative modernity, through the work of the diaspora and of architects who have been equally exposed both to the local and the international dimension of the modern. In most chapters, a sub-theme organizes the examples studied: the Mediterranean patio house, integration into the land’s contour, the intrinsic relation between materials and colors and the way it has been published in modernity, muralism and the visual impactof asymmetrical spatial sequences. The book also seeks to explore […] the intricate ways in which architects and projects often seem to be linked across remote parts of the world”.
By including a few contemporary examples, Rethinking Modernity“intends to demonstrate modernity as a rich and lastingly exciting array of concepts that allude to sequences, and as a multi-layered, constantly reinvigorated tradition of syntheses”.
“Rethinking Modernity is a breath of fresh air for designers willing to broaden their scope and a testimony of good intentions towards young architects-to-be”.*
