English Description: NEORIO DOMUS | A modern villa withbioclimatic element in the southern part of Crete designed by Michalis Tsagarakis & Associates and Maria Triamataki
The area is located at the tip of the Messara plain towards the Libyan Sea, in the southern part of Crete; Α herbaceous landscape, its predominant element being some olive trees and kermes oaks titled by the wind towards its usual direction.
The study focuses on the design of a permanent residence with a laboratory space that meets the needs of a family from a northern foreign country, which has now opted to live in this corner of the Mediterranean.
“In this case, the aim was to transfer both everyday life and artistic activity to the outer sheltered semi-open space– the interior deck«.
East Elevation
The chance to blend into the Cretan landscape and the proximity to the Minoan antiquities of Phaistos will be a new source of inspiration for the ceramic artist.
North Elevation
The main semi-open space, with double frontage along a north-south axis, is an off center part of the construction that serves as a boundary for its different functions (main residence / laboratory).
West Elevation
The main volumes are placed in a linear arrangement and present a rhythmic void to solid sequence: laboratory, interior deck, eating area-dining room-living room, atrium, sleeping area. The main residence develops further on a second level where a room is found; that same volume demarcates the main entrance on the ground floor.
South Elevation
Walls (solid masses) are made of stone, while the side surfaces of the atrium (void) are covered with rough surface white plaster. The swimming pool found further inside the interior deck is a reminder of its actual function, as well as a bioclimatic element since the air will serve as a cooling factor in the atrium.
Ground Floor Plan
First Floor Plan
On the west side, responding to the topography, the design takes advantage of the natural slope of the terrain to present an outdoor living room facing the south.
Section A-A
Section B-B
A composition of ceramic tiles in shades and geometries inspired by the camaraik style decorative motifs of the Phaistos palace is placed on the floor of the interior deck.
