English description: ATHES architects undertook the complete façade reconstruction and interior design of a two-storey house, in Athens, Greece, seeking to “bring the past into a sustainable future”.
The preservation of a stone building, constructed in 1950’s, was the inspirational vision for its complete façade reconstruction and interior renovation.
The main goal was to preserve its original character and upgrade its energy performance. The identity of the house is composed with vintage and industrial touches in order to mark the aesthetic connection and interaction between the past and the future.
The design focuses on the interaction of old materials with new techniques, creating a whole new sense which is driven by the nostalgia of another era combined with today’s comforts.
The architectural elements of the façade, the stone revealed on the ground floor and the old brickwork that embraces part of the first floor façade are complemented by the dark gray thermal coating, the shutters and the copper tube drain and compose the identity of a house with vintage and industrial touches.
On the ground floor, the architectural design aims to integrate the earthy shades of authentic stone with emphasis on the wooden and metallic textures and furniture, by creating the sense of an atmospheric space which opens up to the garden.
On the first floor, the combination of whitecement mortar with the existing mosaic flooring in the corridor, the old oakfloor in the living areas, as well as the blackwooden kitchen, creates a recalling memory from old times and an interesting spatial contrast.
